Map of Construction

The City of St. John’s will be upgrading Major’s Path, from Hebron Way to Portugal Cove Road, and constructing a new roundabout at the intersection of Portugal Cove Road, Major's Path, and Airport Heights Drive.

The project will begin in 2024 with upgrades to Major's Path from Hebron Way to Portugal Cove Road. These upgrades will include widening of the road to facilitate a left turn lane, a new sidewalk on the south side of the street, improved street lighting as well as a new shared use path on the northside of the street. The addition of a shared use path creates an active transportation network to allow people of all ages and abilities to safely get where they need to go, using whichever mode of active transportation they choose.

The project also includes the construction of a modern multi-lane roundabout at the Portugal Cove Road- Major's Path-Airport Heights Drive intersection. The roundabout will have active transportation crossings with connections to the new shared use path on the north side of Major's Path and the Airport Heights to Paul Reynolds Community Centre shared use path. As part of the intersection upgrades, two existing large diameter culverts on Virginia River will also be replaced. This work will be completed after the upgrades to Major’s Path.

The entire project is tentatively scheduled to be completed by fall 2026.

Check out the Frequently Asked Questions for further details. A map of the construction area is available in the Documents.

While traffic on Major's Path, Portugal Cove Road and Airport Heights Drive will be maintained during construction, there will be some disruptions, lane reductions, and slowdowns, and detours may be required at times. The City will make every effort to minimize interruptions.

Pedestrian access will be maintained during construction, and we ask the public to obey and follow all posted signage in and near the construction zones.

The City of St. John’s apologizes for the inconvenience that this work may cause. To report issues, residents can contact Access St. John’s by calling 311 or 709-754-CITY (2489), by emailing access@stjohns.ca or via the St. John’s 311 app.

The design of the roundabout has not yet been finalized, however, there will be active transportation crossings on all four approaches to the roundabout that will connect to existing sidewalks, shared use paths, and trails. The crossings consist of marked crosswalks with pedestrian activated signals (rectangular rapid flashing beacons) and signage.

The existing traffic lights at Major’s Path and Portugal Cove Road will remain operational throughout construction. Vehicles are not permitted to enter Airport Heights Drive from Portugal Cove Road or Major’s Path. The left turn lane from Portugal Cove Road (north bound) to Airport Heights Drive has been closed and the left turn arrow has been disabled. In addition, the right turn lane from Portugal Cove Road (south bound) to Airport Heights Drive, as well as the straight through from Major’s Path to Airport Heights Drive are closed.

Vehicles can access Portugal Cove Road from Major's Path to travel in either direction.

Airport Heights Drive has been reduced to one-way, exit-only traffic to Portugal Cove Road and Major's Path.

We hope this answers your questions, please reach out if you need additional information.

Great question. This access point has been reopened to traffic at Airport Heights Drive. The utility pole remains in the intersection; concrete barriers and orange construction delineators have been put in place to mark the pole.

Thank you for your question. The City considered various options for traffic control on Airport Heights Drive, including alternating the direction of traffic based on area traffic patterns (i.e., exit-only during the morning peak traffic period and enter-only during the afternoon peak traffic period). However, with this approach, the traffic control set-up would have to be revised multiple times each day and was deemed a safety concern, as one way traffic flow should be consistent to avoid the possibility of confusing motorists.

Thank you for your question. Properties on Airport Road will not be subject to a civic assessment for any of the Major’s Path, roundabout or culvert work.

The shared-use path along Major's Path is part of the planned citywide active transportation network. You can view the planned bike network at the following link: https://map.stjohns.ca/cycling/

Please note that you’ll need to toggle the layers on the left side of the screen to see the shared-use path routes currently being designed and constructed, as well as the full network plan.

The new Major's Path shared-use path (SUP) will connect to three active transportation routes at its west end:

At its east end, the new shared-use path along Majors Path will connect to the existing SUP at the Hebron Way roundabout. No further routes have been funded for engagement, design, and construction from Hebron Way at this time.
